ISO 17100 Translation Services — Quality Standard

17100:2015 is the latest and most demanding international ISO quality standard for Translation Services approved by CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) and introduced in Poland by the Polish Committee for Standardization.

The ISO 17100:2015 Translation Services quality standard replaces the previously applicable 15038 standard, extending it with new guidelines. They concern:

  • the competence of translators, proofreaders and project managers;
  • development path of the people performing the translation service;
  • quality management procedures;
  • controlling and recording the process of the translation service.

Competences of the People Performing the Translation Service

ISO 17100 Standard requires the translation process to involve at least two specialists. Each of them must prove appropriate competence, experience or education, confirming that they have sufficient skills and knowledge to perform the tasks assigned on an adequate level.

In addition, all the processes comprising the carried out translation service must be performed in accordance with the set out procedures, undergo control and be recorded.

Qualifications of Translators According to ISO 17100:2015

In the field of translator’s qualifications, the ISO 17100:2015 Standard requires that at least one of the following criteria should be met:

  • a recognised graduate qualification in translation from an institution of higher education;
  • a recognised graduate qualification in any other field from an institution of higher education, plus two years of full-time professional experience in translating;
  • five years of full-time professional experience in translating.

Qualifications of Proofreaders According to ISO 17100:2015

Those involved in additional proofreading of translated texts are required to be competent and qualified to the same extent as translators AND should provide evidence of experience in the field of translation and/or proofreading in the given field.

Qualifications of Project Managers According to ISO 17100:2015

People assigned to translation project management should:

  • have adequate, documented competence;
  • have sufficient knowledge of the translation industry;
  • continually expand their knowledge and learn new skills in accordance with the changing demands of customers.

The knowledge and skills of project managers should be constantly expanded by sending them to externally and internally organised training courses on:

  • translation processes,
  • new technologies,
  • software and trends in the translation industry,

in order to continually develop their professional qualifications.

Quality Management System Compliant with ISO 17100:2015

ISO 17100 Standard enforces a number of procedures aimed to maintain the highest quality of the provided translation service. This means the need for additional control by a separate specialist as well as recording and documenting the performed processes.
